Live Auction Package #6: “Winter Moon” Painting by Artist Constance LaPalombara (*reserve)

Constance LaPalombara is an eminent artist noted for her paintings of New Haven, who has also worked and exhibited extensively in the United States and Italy. This 16 x 22 painting, “Winter Moon” features the Maritime Building in New Haven, whose bluish green reminded her of the faded color on the shutters of Italian buildings.  When asked what moved her about that motif she said she loves how the geometry of the building and the geometry of the shifting light and shadows interact with each other – which brings to mind the comment by Louis Kahn that “the sun never knew how great it was until it hit the side of a building”  – and also, we might add, the side of a Winter Moon. One of Constance’s cityscapes is included in a show at the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London: A Century of Creativity: Connecticut Art from the New haven Paint and Clay Club. Three of her paintings are in the Koerner Center Community Exhibition at Yale. Donated by Constance LaPalombara.
