Spotlight on The Birgitta Johnson Campership Fund

To Our Friends and Supporters,
Every summer Fellowship Place sponsors a 4 day/3 nighttrip to the Salvation Army’s CONNRI Lodge in Ashford, CT. Approximately 30 individuals attend with 3 staff people. Many of the costs associated with the trip are underwritten by the Birgitta Johnson Campership Fund, which was established to provide summer vacations for our clients. Birgitta Johnson was a former President of the Fellowship Place Board of Directors and an avid traveler. At the time of her death, we decided the fund would be a wonderful way to honor her memory and provide summer get-aways for individuals who may not have the opportunity or funds for a vacation. The CONNRI trip provides a welcome respite from urban life, fun activities, and, most of all, the opportunity to build strong peer support networks. This trip is just another innovative way that Fellowship Place promotes good mental health. I hope you will take a minute to read the letter below sent from one of our campers upon his return from the 2026 trip. Donations to help with the 2027 trip are accepted throughout the year. You may send a check to Fellowship Place, 441 Elm Street, New Haven, CT 06511 or visit www.fellowshipplace.org and click on DONATE.

Happy summer memories!

Dear Amazing Donors,
It is hard to put into words just how thankful I am for your generosity and kindness. Because of your donations, not only was I able to attend Camp Connri, but so were many of my friends and peers. Thank you for believing in us and giving us an experience that we will never forget.

For many of us, Camp Connri was more than just a few days away from home. It was a place where we could get away from the busy city life. It drives us crazy so it was nice for all of us to breathe in and out clean country air. It was also a place where we could laugh without worrying, strengthen our friendships and even bond with other peers.

Some of my favorite memories were playing bingo, the auction, drawing and coloring, I loved learning about different countries and the food they serve. I really was scared to do the boat but I ended up going twice so I could have less anxiety than the first boat ride. I really enjoyed fishing. I was told I handled fishing really well. Both fish I caught were bass and at least a foot long. They were super strong but I didn’t panic. The hook got stuck in the corner of his mouth but we got it out with team work! With all these activities happening it could be overwhelming but I loved how everyone cheered and pushed fellow peers to try new things.

So overall, Camp gave us the chance to step away from challenges we face in everyday life, and focus on joy, friendship, and hope. We encouraged each other, celebrated each others accomplishments, and created memories that will stay with us for years to come. We all left camp with greater confidence, stronger friendships, and renewed belief that we are capable of more than we give ourselves credit for.

Speaking personally, your generosity mean the world to me. Camp Connri gave me a chance to reconnect with nature, spend meaningful time with incredible friends, continue growing as a person. Seeing everyone smiling, laughing, and supporting one another reminded me just how powerful kindness and community can be. Your donations did far more than cover the cost of attending camp-you gave us an opportunity to experience happiness, belonging, and hope. You reminded us that there are people who genuinely care about our well-being and want us to succeed. That is an unmeasurable gift.

Again we will always remember your kindness, and the joy you helped make possible! With heartfelt gratitude,

Aaron Krause
