Fellowship Place’s Oktoberfest a Success

A very special thank you to our corporate underwriters, raffle sponsors, guests and supporters for joining us on October 26 for an evening of German inspired food, drink, and music at the Whitneyville Cultural Commons.  All proceeds will be invested in direct services, such as the Healthy Meals Initiative, expressive arts groups, case management, and Employment Services.  This year Fellowship Place must privately raise approximately $300,000.00 to maintain our services and keep our doors open 365 days a year for the 700+ men and women who come to our campus for help.  Events like Oktoberfest take us one-step closer to goal.

Fellowship’s Supported Education Program Achieves a Perfect Score on DMHAS Fidelity Review

Fellowship Place was the only Supported Education program in Connecticut to receive a perfect score on the recent fidelity review conducted by the State Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services.  The fidelity review, which assesses how closely a program is aligned with best practices in supported education, includes an audit of case files, staff interviews, client interviews, and interviews with clients’ family members.

Fellowship Place’s Supported Education program promotes self-sufficiency and economic independence by helping clients enroll in college or a trade school. The program offers education assessment & planning, GED classes & tutoring, assistance with the college enrollment process (applications, financial aid, academic accommodations, placement testing), and ongoing support while enrolled in classes. In FY16, the program served 54 adults; 84% of those who enrolled in school remained in their education program until the completion of their school term. This year the program also received funding from the Melville Charitable Trust to develop a scholarship program for homeless & formerly homeless individuals. As of October 1, 2016, a total of 13 scholarships have been awarded to help recipients purchase computers, school supplies, and equipment required for trade school.

Fellowship Place Partners with Leap of Faith Adaptive Skiers for Day of Water Sports on Lake Zoar

Thanks to a new partnership with Leap of Faith Adaptive Skiers, this summer members of Fellowship’s Social Rehab Center will have the opportunity to try water skiing, tubing, and boating on Lake Zoar. Leap of Faith’s mission is to build lasting confidence and fulfillment through exposure and professional training in recreational and competitive water and snow skiing for children, adults and veterans with disabilities. Thank you Leap of Faith Adaptive Skiers for hosting us for two separate day trips, each filled with new challenges and lots of fun.  This activity is part of Fellowship Place’s physical recreation program, which promotes exercise, a healthy life style, and positive self-esteem for all of our clients.

Fellowship Place Members take a 4-day Group Trip to Camp CONNRI

Since 2013, Fellowship Place has offered our clients the opportunity to take a summer vacation to the Salvation Army’s Camp CONNRI in Ashford, CT. For many of our clients, this trip is their first vacation ever.  At camp, they enjoy fresh air and the natural beauty of a rural setting.  Most importantly, they enjoy the opportunity to try new activities like kayaking, archery, hiking, and swimming. By going outside his/her normal comfort zone, each camper builds confidence and the courage to try other new things once back at home. This is all a part of each client’s personal recovery journey.  Campers always come home refreshed and revitalized and with lots of wonderful memories to share with friends and family.  Special thanks to The Salvation Army for hosting this lost cost trip and to donors for the Birgitta Johnson Campership Fund, which underwrites the cost of the trip for some of the campers.
