Fellowship Place has been awarded a 2022 grant award from NewAlliance Foundation in support of the agency’s Healthy Meal Program, which addresses food insecurity & nutrition for low-income adults living with serious mental illness who attend therapeutic activities on our agency’s campus. The program provides access to free healthy meals daily.
CONNRI Lodge, an adult retreat center operated by the Salvation Army, welcomed twenty members of Fellowship Place for a wonderful day of summer fun. The trip was underwritten by the Birgitta Johnson Campership Fund. Given the challenges of the past year, this day away from the city was a welcome respite for Fellowship’s clients. All who attended were fully vaccinated, and the CONNRI staff made certain safety precautions were in place. Special thanks to the Salvation Army and donors to the Campership Fund for making the trip possible.

We all need to work together to build a stronger community where people from the black and brown communities, the poor, and individuals struggling with mental illness and substance abuse have equal access to education, employment, housing, and mental health treatment.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Fellowship Place is hosting a virtual conversation on the need for criminal justice reform and how people of color and people living with mental illness have been failed by the courts and the prison system. African Americans are incarcerated in state prisons across the country at more than five times the rate of whites. More than one-third of inmates in state and federal prisons suffer from a mental illness. Emily Bazelon will lead a conversation about the disparities in the criminal justice system and the reforms that are urgently needed; she will be joined by a panel of formerly incarcerated individuals served by Fellowship Place.

Ms. Bazelon is a staff writer at the New York Times Magazine, the Truman Capote Fellow for Creative Writing and Law at Yale Law School, and a co-host of the Slate Political Gabfest, a popular weekly podcast. She is the author of two national bestsellers published by Penguin Random House: Charged, about the power of prosecutors, and Sticks and Stones, about how to prevent bullying. Charged won the 2020 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in the current interest category and the Silver Gavel Book Award from the American Bar Association. Before joining the Times Magazine, Emily was a writer and editor for nine years at Slate. She is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School.

Fellowship Place’s mission is to serve adults living with mental illness by offering a full range of therapeutic support and rehabilitation services that promote independence, wellness, and a meaningful life. Open 365 days a year, our campus community serves over 800 people annually who are living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Services include day programming, permanent supportive housing, vocational services, homeless engagement services, and support for individuals transitioning out of incarceration. Fellowship’s programs complement and enhance traditional psychiatric care provided in hospital and clinic settings.

Fellowship Place took to the streets on Saturday morning to participate in the Annual Spring Clean-up sponsored by the Greater Dwight Development Corporation.
About ten members and their counselors raked and picked up trash & bottles on Elm, University Place, and Dwight. All part of our way of giving back to the community and being a good neighbor.
Fellowship Place was recognized by Dr. Ezra Griffith in the latest edition of Psychiatric News for its Creative Writing group. According to Dr. Griffith, creative writing is an important tool in mental health care, promoting trust, community, self-expression, and reminiscence.
Annually, Fellowship Place collaborates with Yale student volunteers from the VITA program to make certain clients who are part of the agency’s Supported Employment program get their income taxes prepared for free. Due to the pandemic, this year the tax clinic was a virtual event. The agency provided phones, laptop computers, and counselor assistance to help each client upload his/her documents to the Yale volunteers and hold a virtual meeting to prepare the tax forms. This all took a little extra effort, but we got the job done. Most of our clients have already received their refunds!
A special thank you to Aaron Farr and Rachel Handler, the VITA Coordinators at Yale, for working through the unique challenges we had this year so that the annual Income Tax Clinic could still happen.
