Yale School of Management Graduate Students Conduct Career Development Workshop for Clients

On April 29 graduate students from the Yale School of Management (SOM) conducted a Career Development workshop for clients enrolled in Fellowship Place’s Supported Employment program. Nine volunteers from SOM met one on one with clients to help with resume writing and to practice interview skills. After the workshop, some of the volunteers stayed for dinner and karaoke with people on campus for the Evening Social program. A special shout out to SOM for sharing their expertise with us and to Arielle Sydnor, our Board Fellow, for organizing the event. Our clients learned a lot and were inspired by the students.

Fellowship Place Food Services Training Program Graduation

On April 23rd Fellowship Place celebrated the graduation of Jonathan from the agency’s Food Services Training program. Jonathan completed the 6-month training program with flying colors; he had excellent attendance and punctuality and was open to constructive feedback as he learned about food safety and sanitation, meal preparation and serving, stocking inventory, and how to run a commercial dishwasher. Jonathan recently passed the Servsafe exam, a National Restaurant Association credential that documents competency in food services. He will now begin a job search in the Food Service industry with the help of his Employment Specialist.

Betty Williams says giving up crack cocaine was easier than her ongoing struggle to quit cigarettes. “A cigarette is a friend” said Williams, who lives with schizophrenia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. People with mental illness account for 44% of the cigarette purchases in the United States, and they are less likely to quit.
